The study also indicated that resveratrol had the ability to retard the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting their capacity to divide and causing cell death (apoptosis).
In a press release concerning this study, researcher, and professor Karen Brown stated,
“Our study was the first to show that resveratrol can be regenerated in cells by sulphate metabolites and that this resveratol can have biological activity which can be useful in many types of diseases in humans. “Importantly, we did all our work with a medically obtainable concentration so that we are optimistic that our conclusions will be translated for humans. “Overall, I think our conclusions are very encouraging for all types of medical research on resveratrol. Study at the University of Missouri
In a recent study at the University of Missouri. Resveratrol was found to cause melanoma tumor cells to be more susceptible to traditional cancer treatments. The next step in this process will be for researchers to develop a way to administer resveratrol directly to tumor sites to potentially treat many different types of cancer.
Although the research concerned the treatment of melanoma using resveratrol in conjunction with radiation therapy, tests showed that the resveratrol alone killed more cancer cells than the radiation. In fact, 44% of the 65% of tumor cells were killed with the resveratrol alone.
Michael Nicholl, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, and surgical oncologist at Columbia, Missouri’s Ellis Fischel Cancer Center indicated their findings warranted more research into the cancer-fighting benefits of resveratrol.
“We have seen a glimpse of the possibilities, and it seems that resveratrol could potentially be very important in the treatment of various types of cancers.”
